​BASF R & D: Colorant Consistency

BASF scientists use cutting-edge technology to ensure colorant quality. When it comes to color consistency, they don't depend on the naked eye.

The color-eye test helps BASF ensure that our colorant is consistent with its true color — that the cherry brown in the Mulch Magic® colorant line always meets our standard for what that shade should look like.

Here's how the testing works:

  • The color-eye test uses an instrument called a spectrophotometer to assign a numerical value to each color in the BASF colorant lines. The numerical value is a composite of several different measurements, including lightness/darkness, hue and chroma.
  • Taking those results, each color can be placed on a 3-D sphere like what you see above. Seeing a color's location allows it to be compared and contrasted with other colors, even those very similar in shade.
  • The color-eye test can be used to check the quality of a batch of colorant or, in research, to improve upon formulations. BASF has very tight tolerances for passing the test.
  • The color-eye test lets customers know that they are getting the same color batch after batch, year after year — your mulch color is always true to the ideal for that shade.
