Hammond Farms Enhances Operation with Equipment, Colorant
Hammond Farms, a landscape supply store based near Lansing, Michigan, has been serving customers with high-quality materials since 1982. It has distinguished itself in the market with a virgin pine product and offering same- and next-day service on many deliveries.
In 2019, the business looked to upgrade its mulch-coloring process from a trommel, which was time consuming to set up and labor intensive to operate. The process also required a lot of water and colorant. Hammond Farms chose Colorbiotics’ Sahara X3 and colorant offerings to streamline its operation.
The Lowdown
“We went from 20 or 22 gallons of water [with the trommel] down to 12 with the Sahara X3,” said Dustin Seward, the operations manager with 28 years’ experience at Hammond Farms. “It makes for a drier product. It seems to set faster. We use a lot less colorant now that we’re able to dial it in with the GEM StudioGEM Studio.”
Colorbiotics Territory Manager Lee Guggenbiller worked with Seward throughout the process and finds great satisfaction in the results.
“Nothing is more rewarding than helping my customers accomplish their goals,” he said.
Pass it On
The gains Hammond Farms made using the Sahara X3 and Colorbiotics’ colorant have, in turn, benefited their customers.
“For me, it's the quality control of knowing that we're putting out a consistent product year after year that should last years to come for our customers,” Seward said.
